Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.” ~ John 8:12*
It is before sunrise as the Southwest flight takes off into the air. As I pass over Austin at 3,000 feet, I look down and see tiny cars traversing the road – headlights shining only a few feet in front on the pitch-black roadway. It calls to mind what my mother and father used to tell me: God knows the road you’ll travel and your final destination.
As parents, we try to let our children know the potholes and detours that will prevent them from enjoying the journey God has planned for them. When I was a child, my mother elaborated on that to me, saying that when we detour from God’s rules for living, we often stumble and fall.
Now, a car’s light never lights the entire journey at once – only the part we need to see. Watching those cars find their way in the darkness with only two small beams of light reminds me that God only allows us to see one day at a time. He is our light that shines in the darkness of this world, showing us the correct path to take.
If a headlight goes out – as it does in our life when we make a wrong choice or when trials come our way – we quickly replace the bulb with a new one. Through prayer, we find God’s will again.
God’s path for us is perfect, and we can rest, knowing we can trust Him with our life’s journey until we meet our Savior at the end. And then, that’s only the beginning.
